Washington Reaffirms Stance on North Korea’s Nuclear Issue

(MENAFN) A senior US representative stated on Monday that "complete denuclearization" of North Korea continues to be the cornerstone of Washington’s approach, as reported by a news agency.

Acting US Ambassador to Seoul Kevin Kim delivered this clarification after conferring with South Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo, according to the news agency.

His remarks emerged only days after the Donald Trump administration unveiled its updated National Security Strategy (NSS), which notably omitted any direct reference to Pyongyang’s denuclearization.

Kim emphasized to journalists that "President Trump and (South Korean) President Lee (Jae Myung) reiterated their commitment to the complete denuclearization of North Korea in the joint fact sheet," pointing to the recently issued bilateral summit document.

He affirmed, "That is our Korea policy right now."

He further explained that North Korea featured prominently in his discussions with Park, including strategies to "best coordinate" on interconnected matters and broader regional concerns.

Addressing a query about whether Washington might consider amending the nuclear energy accord to permit Seoul to enrich uranium or reprocess spent fuel, Kim noted that both countries are "still in discussions."

He added, "We are going to do our best to implement the joint fact sheet."

As outlined in the fact sheet released by the White House following the late-October meeting between Lee and Trump in Busan, the two leaders “reiterated their commitment to the complete denuclearization of the DPRK (North Korea) and peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.”
