Netanyahu expects to enter second phase of Gaza ceasefire plan soon
The ceasefire, which began on October 10, 2023, requires Palestinian militants to release hostages captured during the Hamas-led attack on Israel. All captives have been freed except for the remains of an Israeli police officer, marking progress in the first phase of the agreement.
Netanyahu outlined the phased plan, noting that the initial truce and hostage release have been completed. The next phase involves disarming Hamas and demilitarizing Gaza, while the third phase will focus on deradicalization and reconstruction, modeled on efforts previously undertaken in Germany, Japan, and Gulf states.
Netanyahu also said he plans to meet US President Donald Trump later this month to discuss further opportunities for peace in the region, emphasizing Israel’s commitment to the phased ceasefire plan.
Chancellor Merz, on his first visit to Israel since taking office, reaffirmed Germany’s support for Israel. He stressed that criticism of Israeli policies must not be misused as a cover for antisemitism, highlighting the resilience of German-Israeli diplomatic relations despite recent tensions over the Gaza war.
Separately, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in Hebron following what Israel described as an attempted ramming attack. The victims, aged 17 and 55, were identified by the Palestinian Authority. Violence in the West Bank has surged since the Gaza war began, with over 1,000 Palestinians killed and at least 44 Israelis killed in attacks or military operations since October 2023.
