Kosovo calls on Hungary to help end EU restrictions
Osmani made the remarks following her meeting with Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok in Pristina, where the two leaders discussed bilateral relations, regional developments, and Kosovo’s path toward EU integration. She noted Budapest’s longstanding advocacy for greater EU engagement with the Western Balkans and highlighted its influence on enlargement-related matters.
During the discussion, Osmani stressed that “the removal of these unfair measures is vital” for Kosovo to advance reforms, strengthen institutions, and preserve economic stability. She added that Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic integration “is in the interest of our citizens, the region and the entire European continent.”
Hungary has often criticized the EU’s restrictive stance toward Kosovo, arguing that sanctions hinder long-term stability and dialogue efforts between Kosovo and Serbia. Budapest has also emerged as a strong proponent of accelerating EU enlargement.
The EU imposed several restrictive measures on Kosovo in mid-2023, citing Pristina’s inadequate steps to reduce tensions in the Serb-majority north following unrest triggered by local elections. The sanctions limited Kosovo’s participation in senior EU events and blocked access to certain development and financial programs.
In May, EU foreign policy officials announced a gradual rollback of the restrictions after partial progress in easing tensions and renewed diplomatic engagement within the EU-mediated dialogue. However, several limitations remain, and officials have emphasized that their full removal depends on Kosovo continuing to implement commitments related to local governance, security coordination, and the dialogue with Serbia.
Osmani said she anticipates closer cooperation with Hungary as Kosovo seeks to regain full access to EU mechanisms and accelerate its journey toward candidate status and deeper integration.
