Border clashes force thousands to flee Thailand-Cambodia border
In response, Thai authorities closed nearly 1,000 schools across six border provinces, converting some into temporary shelters for displaced families. Each center reportedly provides bedding,
food, drinking water, electricity, sanitation, and areas for young children, according to Thai officials. On the Cambodian side, authorities in Preah Vihear province relocated over 1,500 families to safe centers following escalating violence. Videos shared on social media showed families, including women and children, taking refuge in drainage ditches.
The latest fighting, which began Monday morning, has already claimed at least 10 lives—seven civilians in Cambodia and three soldiers in Thailand—and left dozens injured. Reports state that 29 Thai soldiers and 20 Cambodian civilians were wounded during the confrontations.
The clashes were sparked after Bangkok accused Phnom Penh of a “border attack” that killed a Thai soldier. Thai F-16 jets conducted airstrikes, while artillery and ground operations targeted alleged Cambodian military positions, including a rocket depot, a casino compound used as a weapons base, and various fortified sites. In turn, Phnom Penh accused Thai forces of carrying out “aggressive military operations on Cambodian territory.”
Tensions between the two neighbors have been escalating since July over a longstanding border dispute. A fragile ceasefire and peace agreement had been brokered in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, witnessed by a former U.S. president and a Malaysian prime minister. Following the recent outbreak of violence, both international figures called on Thailand and Cambodia to honor the ceasefire and exercise restraint to prevent further escalation.
