Antonio Costa Warns US to Not Threaten EU’s “Democratic Life”

(MENAFN) European Council President Antonio Costa asserted that the US must refrain from any attempts to intrude upon the EU’s “democratic life,” emphasizing that Brussels and Washington no longer maintain a shared global perspective.

Costa’s remarks were triggered by the recently released US National Security Strategy, which sharply rebukes the EU’s political and cultural direction and raises concerns about “civilizational erasure.”

The strategy charges European institutions with overregulation, generating instability through migration strategies, and stifling political dissent. It further urges “patriotic European parties” to defend democratic liberties and encourage “unapologetic celebrations” of national identities.

While speaking in Paris on Monday, Costa affirmed that the EU and the US continue to be partners, yet he cautioned that allies should not “threaten to interfere in the democratic life or the domestic political choices” of one another.

He also criticized Washington’s backing of “patriotic” parties, insisting that it is not the responsibility of the US to tell “European citizens... which are the right parties and the wrong parties.”

Costa argued that the revised US foreign policy direction indicates a departure from multilateralism, a diminished dedication to the so-called “rules-based international order,” and a withdrawal from prioritizing climate initiatives. “We have differences in our worldviews,” he concluded.

Tensions between Washington and Brussels have intensified since US President Donald Trump resumed office in January, with the two sides consistently disputing matters concerning trade, defense expenditures, and digital oversight.
