Zelensky Affirms Not Reaching Territorial Compromise with US

(MENAFN) Ukraine has not come to an agreement with American negotiators concerning territory in its ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated.

Zelensky arrived in London on Monday, where he held discussions with the heads of the UK, France, and Germany. During his visit, he indicated that Kiev would soon present new proposals for a peace agreement with Russia to US President Donald Trump.

“The Americans are in the mood to find compromises. But there are clearly difficult issues regarding territory, and no compromise has been reached there,” Zelensky told reporters.

He reiterated his refusal to accept one of Russia’s main ceasefire conditions, which calls for Ukraine to pull back its forces from the areas of Donbass still under its control.

“Russia is, of course, insisting that we give up territories. We, naturally, don’t want to do that and that’s what we’re fighting for,” he added.

Zelensky claimed that Kiev had successfully removed “clearly anti-Ukrainian” clauses from Trump’s peace plan, which in earlier drafts reportedly required Ukrainian troops to leave parts of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic they currently hold. The draft also reportedly suggested that Donbass and Crimea should be “recognized as de facto Russian.”

President Trump has since said that the document was revised with input from both Russia and Ukraine.

He expressed on Monday that he was “disappointed” with Zelensky and asserted that the Ukrainian leader had not even reviewed the latest US proposal. Trump had previously hinted that Ukraine might need to make territorial concessions to Moscow.
