Putin states Russia-West clash not about ideology

(MENAFN) President Vladimir Putin stated that the ongoing confrontation between Russia and the West stems from Western dominance and disregard for Russia’s security interests—not ideological differences, as often claimed. In an interview published Sunday, Putin argued that the West uses ideology merely as a façade to pursue its geopolitical agenda.

He recalled believing that the Cold War divide was rooted in ideology and expected tensions to ease following the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, he said the West’s dismissive stance toward Russia remained unchanged.

“Even after the USSR ceased to exist, the West continued to ignore Russia’s strategic concerns,” Putin said. His attempts to address these concerns with Western leaders, particularly on matters of security and arms control, were met with rejection. He claimed this refusal reflected not just negligence but an intentional push for geopolitical dominance.

Putin stressed that Russia must assert its sovereignty and independence to be taken seriously on the global stage. He also accused the West of breaking past promises, especially regarding NATO’s expansion toward Russia’s borders.

He reiterated earlier statements that the West encouraged anti-Russian movements, including separatism and terrorism, as long as it served their interests.

Putin blamed the West’s military backing of Ukraine and Kiev’s push to join NATO as primary causes of the ongoing conflict. Before the escalation in 2022, Russia had sought security assurances and neutrality from Ukraine, but its proposals were dismissed by Washington and NATO.
