Putin-Trump High-Level Meeting Set for Coming Days

(MENAFN) Moscow and Washington have finalized an agreement to arrange a high-level meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump “in the coming days,” according to a senior Kremlin official on Thursday.

“At the suggestion of the American side, a deal was agreed in principle to hold a bilateral meeting at the highest level in the coming days,” Yuri Ushakov told journalists during a briefing in Moscow.

Ushakov confirmed that both nations have already initiated preparations for the summit. While the proposed location for the talks has been tentatively agreed upon, he noted that logistical specifics would be revealed at a later stage.

Although a firm date has not been finalized, Ushakov said next week is being considered as a potential timeframe. However, he cautioned that the exact timeline hinges on how swiftly preparations can be completed.
"But the option of holding the meeting during the next week was considered, and we are quite positive about this option," he stated.

These developments follow remarks made by President Trump on Wednesday, when he said there was a "good chance" of a forthcoming meeting with President Putin "soon."

Also on Wednesday, US special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow—just two days ahead of the Friday deadline set by Trump for Russia to broker a ceasefire deal with Ukraine or face additional sanctions.

Commenting on that discussion, Ushakov noted that Witkoff floated the idea of a potential trilateral summit involving Putin, Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, Ushakov clarified the proposal was not a focus of the meeting and that Moscow "left the topic 'without comment.'"

"We propose, first of all, to focus on preparing a bilateral meeting with Trump and we consider it most important that this meeting be successful and productive," Ushakov emphasized.

Should the summit take place, it would mark the first in-person meeting between sitting Russian and U.S. presidents since the June 2021 Geneva talks between Putin and then-President Joe Biden.
