Moscow calls for stronger partnership with India
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu met with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Moscow on Thursday to discuss a range of defense and security matters. Doval, a key adviser to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is visiting the Russian capital amid heightened scrutiny from Washington regarding India’s continued purchases of Russian oil.
“Russia and India are linked by strong, trusting, time-tested bonds of friendship,” Shoigu told Doval. “For our country, the comprehensive strengthening of the special privileged strategic partnership with India, based on mutual respect, equal consideration of each other’s interests and the desire to advance a unifying agenda, is of paramount importance.”
Shoigu also stated that both countries aim to promote “a new, more just and sustainable world order, ensuring the supremacy of international law and jointly combating modern challenges and threats.”
During the visit, Doval is expected to hold talks focused on expanding counterterrorism cooperation and advancing defense deals. These include discussions around acquiring additional S-400 air defense systems and the possible purchase of Russian-made Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jets. Energy cooperation, fertilizer supply, and other trade areas are also on the agenda.
Doval’s trip follows recent US actions against India, including an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Wednesday that added a new 25% tariff on Indian imports—doubling the tariff rate to 50% in response to India’s ongoing oil trade with Russia.
India has criticized the move as “extremely unfortunate,” while emphasizing its determination to defend its national interests.
