Lula Reveals BRICS Plan to Respond to Trump
Earlier that day, Trump declared he would raise tariffs on India—another founding member of BRICS—to 50% by late August.
This follows Trump's earlier move this month to impose 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, a decision that Brasilia condemned as an unlawful effort to politically pressure its domestic policies.
Lula told the news agency that he intends to contact his Chinese and Indian counterparts, Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi, and subsequently reach out to other BRICS leaders.
“I’m going to try to discuss with them about how each one is doing in this situation, what the implications are for each country, so we can make a decision,” Lula stated.
The Brazilian president accused Trump of attempting to “dismantle multilateralism” in favor of “unilateralism, where he negotiates one-on-one with other countries,” thus enabling the US to retain “the advantage.”
“What bargaining power does a small Latin American country have against the United States? None,” Lula emphasized.
BRICS was established by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2006, with South Africa joining four years later.
Since expanding its membership, the group’s combined GDP has now surpassed that of the G7 nations.
