Indian Premier vows to "never compromise” on interests the nation’s people
Speaking in New Delhi, Modi said:
“The welfare of our farmers is the highest priority... India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen.”
He added, “I know I will have to pay a heavy personal price for this. But I am ready for it.”
Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order raising tariffs on Indian imports by an additional 25%, bringing total US duties to 50%. The move is a direct response to India’s continued purchase and resale of discounted Russian oil — a practice Washington views as undermining Western sanctions.
The Indian government called the tariffs “extremely unfortunate” and described the action as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”
Trade talks between the two countries have repeatedly stalled, largely due to India’s reluctance to open its agricultural and dairy markets to US producers.
