Five US soldiers get injured from active shooter

(MENAFN) Five soldiers were injured in an active shooter incident Wednesday at Fort Stewart, a U.S. Army installation in southeast Georgia, according to an official statement from the base.

The suspect has been identified as Quornelius Radford, an automated logistics sergeant assigned to the base. He reportedly used a personal handgun to open fire on fellow soldiers.

"It was not a military weapon. We believe it was a personal handgun," said Major General John Lubas, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, during a press conference.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, though Radford has been interviewed by Army investigators. “We believe we’ll gain more information shortly,” Lubas added.

Radford has a prior arrest for driving under the influence, officials confirmed.

The base was placed on lockdown at 11:04 a.m. local time (1504 GMT), which remained in effect until later that afternoon.
