Azerbaijan’s leader lands in US before three-sided peace discussions with Armenia
Aliyev’s visit to the US was initiated at Trump’s invitation, and he was welcomed by officials at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The meeting follows an announcement from Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan’s press secretary, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, who stated that the trilateral talks will focus on fostering peace, prosperity, and regional economic cooperation. Pashinyan is scheduled to visit the US on August 7-8, during which he will also hold a bilateral meeting with Trump.
According to The Washington Post, the White House is expected to host the two leaders on Friday, with the possibility of a peace agreement being announced after the discussions.
Aliyev and Pashinyan last met in Abu Dhabi last month, where they agreed to continue efforts towards normalizing relations and building trust. The two countries have been in conflict since 1991, when Armenian forces took control of Karabakh and surrounding regions internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan reclaimed much of this territory in a 44-day war in 2020, followed by a Russian-brokered peace deal that paved the way for normalization talks.
In September 2023, Azerbaijan gained full control over Karabakh after separatist forces surrendered. Earlier this year, the two sides agreed on all 17 points of a peace deal, although it remains unsigned.
In July, Trump expressed optimism about the peace efforts, telling NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that progress toward a successful agreement seemed likely.
