Vance Says Russia, Ukraine Deal Won’t Satisfy Anyone
"Both the Russians and the Ukrainians, probably, at the end of the day, are going to be unhappy with it," Vance told a news agency.
According to Vance, the Trump administration is aiming for "some negotiated settlement that the Ukrainians and the Russians can live with, where they can live in relative peace, where the killing stops."
He noted that a significant diplomatic barrier has been removed, as President Donald Trump managed to secure Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"One of the most important logjams is that Vladimir Putin said that he would never sit down with Zelenskyy," Vance said. "And the president has now got that to change."
Vance explained that the administration is now focusing on arranging the schedule for the three leaders’ meeting, with Trump and Putin expected to discuss the conflict during a gathering on Friday in the US state of Alaska.
When asked whether Putin should meet Zelenskyy before speaking with Trump, Vance responded that he did not believe it would be "productive."
"I think fundamentally the president of the United States has to be the one to kind of bring these two together," he added.
