India Restricts Jute Imports from Bangladesh
The Indian government has decided that any jute imports from Bangladesh must now pass exclusively through Nhava Sheva, a seaport located in western India, which is nearly 1,200 miles away from the Bangladeshi border.
Quoting a formal announcement from India’s director general of foreign trade, the news agency stated: “Import of certain goods from Bangladesh to India is regulated with immediate effect.”
The newly limited items include woven jute fabrics—both bleached and unbleached—as well as bast fiber textiles, jute twine, cords, ropes, and jute-made sacks and bags.
A similar trade constraint was introduced in June, also targeting Bangladeshi jute goods.
The recent move marks another escalation in trade limitations following growing diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka, which have worsened since the removal of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
In a prior move during May, India had also imposed a prohibition on the import of clothing, processed edibles, plastic goods, and wooden furnishings from Bangladesh.
These actions followed Dhaka’s decision to restrict Indian yarn imports through overland routes, prompting retaliatory measures from New Delhi.
Earlier in 2025, India also revoked a special arrangement that previously permitted Bangladesh to use Indian land routes and ports to ship goods to other countries—excluding Bhutan and Nepal.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs explained that the decision was based on frequent logistical setbacks and elevated transportation expenses, which had been negatively affecting India's own exports and causing shipment delays.
During the 2023–2024 financial year, Bangladesh exported approximately $1.57 billion worth of products to India, with garments alone contributing about $700 million to that figure annually.
