Traffic Accident Leaves 64 Dead in Western Afghanistan

(MENAFN) At least 64 passengers lost their lives and three others were injured in a catastrophic traffic accident on Tuesday night in Herat province, western Afghanistan, according to Abdul Zahir Noorzai, head of the provincial rescue department, who confirmed the toll on Wednesday.

The fatal collision occurred when a passenger bus struck both a motorcycle and a mini-truck along the road connecting Iran to Herat city, Noorzai explained.

Most of the victims were Afghan refugees—men, women, and children—who had recently returned from Iran to resettle in Afghanistan, the official added.

Meanwhile, an additional source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the bus caught fire, making it difficult to identify many of the victims.

The source warned that the number of victims could increase as the collection of information continues.
