U.S. Imposes 50 Percent Tariffs on 407 Steel, Aluminum-Based Products
The expansion broadens the scope of Section 232 tariffs to now include a wide array of items—from wind turbines and bulldozers to mobile cranes, compressors, pumps, furniture, and railcars. The move applies retroactively to shipments already en route to the U.S., catching importers and customs brokers off guard.
It remains uncertain whether these new duties will compound with preexisting country-specific tariffs.
"Today's action expands the reach of the steel and aluminum tariffs and shuts down avenues for circumvention -- supporting the continued revitalization of the American steel and aluminum industries," said Jeffrey Kessler, under secretary for industry and security at the U.S. Commerce Department.
The department listed the newly affected imports only by customs classification numbers—such as “8424.10.0000” for fire extinguishers—offering little clarity for businesses or the public on exactly which goods are impacted.
The heightened tariffs follow President Donald Trump’s early June decision to double duties on steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50%, citing authority under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, Section 301 of Title 3, and Section 604 of the Trade Act of 1974.
In a related action, Trump imposed a 50% tariff on copper-based products in late July, which took effect August 1.
Industry analysts warned of widespread economic consequences.
The levies "will likely ripple through the manufacturing supply chain, raising production costs across construction, automotive, and electronics sectors," media reported, citing expert analysis.
