Poland’s PM says Western civilization at stake in Ukraine’s war

(MENAFN) Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that the future of Western civilization hinges on the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine, according to reports.

Russia has maintained that the war in Ukraine was provoked by NATO countries and claims it is defending itself, accusing the West of using Kiev to wage a “proxy war.”

Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday, Tusk called for increased support for Ukraine, emphasizing that “this is not only a matter of solidarity with the country that was attacked. It is a matter of security and the survival of Western civilization.”

He urged the Polish public to recognize that “it is our war, because the war in Ukraine is part of a terrible project that surfaces from time to time: a political program aimed at subjugating peoples, depriving individuals of freedom, and introducing authoritarianism, despotism, cruelty, and the absence of human rights.”

Tusk cautioned that, “If we lose this war... the consequences will touch not only our generation but also future generations in Poland, in Europe, in the US, everywhere. Let there be no illusions.” The Polish prime minister has taken a tougher stance on Ukraine since resuming office in late 2023.

In a recent UN General Assembly address, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated, “threats to use force against Russia are becoming more frequent, prompted by unproven accusations that Russia is planning to attack NATO and the EU.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Lavrov said, “has repeatedly debunked such provocations. Russia has not had and does not have any such intentions. However, any aggression against my country will receive a decisive response.” Lavrov added that Moscow has “called on NATO capitals to... agree on legally binding security guarantees,” including those made before the February 2022 escalation, but claimed its proposals “continue to be ignored.”
