Clashes Erupt Outside ICE Facility Amid Protests
The unrest was part of a broader wave of protests taking place in multiple cities in response to President Donald Trump’s intensified measures against undocumented immigration and his decision to send in the National Guard.
As reported by a broadcaster, a large crowd of demonstrators marched toward the detention center and obstructed the roadway in front of the facility.
In an effort to disperse the assembly, federal personnel deployed tear gas, smoke devices, and pepper-based projectiles.
According to OPB, no fewer than seven individuals were taken into custody, with two being released a few hours afterward.
In a separate statement, Portland authorities confirmed that two additional arrests were made later in the day.
One of the individuals was found carrying a container of chemical spray and a retractable metal baton.
On the same day, a federal court issued an order temporarily halting the deployment of the National Guard in Portland.
This ruling will remain in effect while legal arguments continue in a lawsuit initiated by both state and municipal officials.
Elsewhere, President Trump approved the deployment of National Guard troops to Chicago.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), border enforcement agents were “boxed in by ten cars” during a confrontation.
Federal personnel responded by shooting and injuring a woman who was armed with a firearm.
