Sudan's Khartoum Airport Reopens for Domestic Flights
(MENAFN) Sudan's Civil Aviation Authority announced on Monday that Khartoum International Airport will resume domestic flights starting Wednesday, ending a closure that lasted for 30 months due to the ongoing conflict in the country.
An official news agency reported, "The Civil Aviation Authority issued a notice announcing the resumption of domestic flights at Khartoum International Airport beginning Wednesday, Oct. 22, in accordance with approved operational procedures."
This announcement indicates that the airport is now prepared to gradually accept flights after completing all necessary technical and operational preparations.
According to the news agency, the decision reflects the airport’s readiness to handle air traffic once again.
The reopening of Khartoum International Airport marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time in over two and a half years that the airport has resumed its operations amidst the ongoing conflict between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Since April 2023, the war between the army and RSF has resulted in over 20,000 fatalities and displaced approximately 14 million people, as reported by the UN and local authorities.
However, research from US universities suggests that the actual death toll may be as high as 130,000.
On March 27, 2023, the Sudanese army announced that it had cleared the last RSF strongholds in Khartoum province.
This included regaining control of the airport, several military and security facilities, as well as neighborhoods in the capital's eastern and southern regions, marking the first such victory since the conflict began.
