Ukraine, U.S. Collaborate on Delivery of Patriots
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukraine and the United States are in the process of arranging an agreement for the transfer of 25 Patriot air defense systems to Kyiv.
These statements were shared with the press and published on Monday by Ukrainian media platforms, including a state-run news agency.
Zelenskyy explained that Ukrainian officials have established connections with defense manufacturers to address air defense needs, doing so in coordination with appropriate U.S. governmental bodies.
“We are preparing a contract for 25 Patriot systems. I believe this is a very good story -- not easy, but long-term,” he stated, emphasizing that the request came specifically from Ukraine’s Air Force.
He further noted that there is currently a production backlog for the Patriot systems, with various nations already having agreements in place with the producer. As a result, Ukraine will receive these defense systems in differing quantities over the coming years.
“The White House can change the queue if there is political will. We understand which European countries can give us priority in the queue. There is more positivity on this issue -- we are working now to obtain the necessary solutions,” Zelenskyy added, suggesting that with the right political backing, Kyiv could move up the list.
On the topic of potential U.S. deliveries of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, Zelenskyy also shared his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin contacted U.S. President Donald Trump last Thursday, reacting to Trump's recent statements on the matter.
