APEC leaders recognize cultural, creative sector in summit declaration

(MENAFN) Leaders of the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member states adopted a summit declaration on Saturday that highlights cultural and creative industries as a new engine of growth for the region. The declaration followed the conclusion of the two-day summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.

“We reaffirm our shared recognition that robust trade and investment are vital to the growth and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region, and remain committed to deepening economic cooperation to navigate the evolving global environment,” the declaration stated.

Under the theme “Connectivity, Innovation, and Prosperity,” the document outlined APEC’s priorities, including trade, investment, digital innovation, and inclusive growth amid global economic uncertainties. It noted, “We acknowledge that advancements in science and technology can contribute to addressing common challenges and create new drivers of growth in the APEC region.”

For the first time, the declaration explicitly recognized cultural and creative industries (CCIs) as a regional growth driver, adding, “We acknowledge the positive contribution of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) to economic growth, and affirm the importance of robust intellectual property protections.”

In addition to the main declaration, APEC leaders approved two supplementary documents: one focusing on member states’ collaboration on an AI initiative, and another addressing demographic challenges—both initiatives championed by South Korea.

Ahead of the leaders’ summit, US President Donald Trump addressed APEC business leaders in South Korea on Wednesday, leaving the country on Thursday. Casey Mace, a senior US official, represented the United States at the leaders’ discussions.
