Sudan Rights Group Accuses RSF of Storming Village in North Darfur

(MENAFN) A Sudanese human rights group has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of launching a deadly assault on Mastariha village in North Darfur, western Sudan.

The nongovernmental organization Emergency Lawyers said in a statement Tuesday that RSF fighters stormed Mastariha on Monday, torching multiple homes.

According to the group, the ground raid followed drone strikes that hit a health center, market, guest facilities, and residential areas, leaving casualties and forcing dozens of villagers to flee.

The organization condemned the attack as a “blatant violation” of international humanitarian law and human rights.

“This attack adds to the ongoing record of violations in Darfur, which may constitute genocide and crimes against humanity, reflecting a systematic pattern of attacks on civilians and their property," the statement read. The group urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate crimes in Darfur and prosecute those responsible.

The RSF has not issued an immediate response, though several of its members posted videos online claiming control of Mastariha.

The paramilitary force currently holds sway over five Darfur states, with the exception of parts of North Darfur still under army control. Sudan’s military maintains authority over most of the country’s remaining states, including the capital, Khartoum.

The war, which erupted in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly 13 million people, creating one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises and widespread famine conditions, according to UN reports.
