Floods Batter Parts of Indonesia's Bali

(MENAFN) Severe flooding has overwhelmed parts of Indonesia’s top tourist destination after days of relentless rain, forcing emergency evacuations in Bali’s capital and surrounding resort zones.

Authorities said Tuesday that torrential downpours inundated large sections of Denpasar, with the coastal district of Sanur among the hardest hit. Floodwaters surged through key streets, including Jalan Bumi Ayu and Jalan Kesari in Sanur, and Jalan Gunung Athena in Denpasar.

In some neighborhoods, water levels climbed to 1.5 meters — roughly chest-high on an adult — submerging villas and hotels and disrupting tourism operations at the height of travel activity.

Emergency teams moved swiftly to extract stranded visitors. A search and rescue unit from the Bali Police deployed 14 personnel early Tuesday, using four canoes and a rubber boat to navigate flooded streets and carry out evacuations.

"So far, five guests have been evacuated, and seven people were evacuated in the north," team coordinator Gede Sutrawan was quoted by local media as saying.

The flooding comes after several consecutive days of intense rainfall across much of Bali. Officials cautioned that additional rain could extend or intensify the crisis, urging both residents and foreign visitors to remain alert and follow official safety guidance.
