Ukraine Deploys Specialists Across Mideast to Combat Iranian Drones

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday that 201 Ukrainian experts specializing in counter-drone operations have been deployed across the Middle East to help combat Iranian Shahed drones, with an additional 34 personnel on standby to support these missions, as stated by reports.

"Our teams are already in the Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and on the way to Kuwait. We are working with several other countries," Zelenskyy told a group of around 60 parliamentarians during a session at the UK parliament, where NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was also present.

Emphasizing that Iranian drones must not succeed against neighboring countries, Zelenskyy said Ukraine sent these specialists "at the request of our partners, including the United States."

"In fact, this is a part of drone deal we proposed to the United States, which we worked on together and which is still on the table, and we are ready to offer similar deals to all our reliable partners, from practical cooperation on drones to future defense alliances," he said.

Zelenskyy explained that Iranian drones are intended for the "low-cost destruction" of critical and costly infrastructure, and noted that Iran shared the technology with Russia to deploy and produce them.

"Russia then upgraded them, and now we have clear evidence that Iranian Shaheds used in the region contain Russian components," he said.

He stressed that the conflict in the Middle East is directly relevant to Ukraine due to this Iran-Russia collaboration, saying: "So what is happening around Iran today is not a faraway war for us because of the cooperation between Russia and Iran. And we do not believe we have the right to be indifferent."

Zelenskyy highlighted the economic disparity in these attacks, noting that while an Iranian Shahed drone costs about $50,000, defending against it often requires missiles costing up to $4 million or the use of combat aircraft.
