UAE Moves Schools to Remote Learning After Security Escalation
(MENAFN) The United Arab Emirates has announced that schools across the country will temporarily shift to distance learning following renewed waves of reported Iranian attacks, despite an existing ceasefire framework between Tehran and Washington, according to the Education Ministry on Monday.
In an official statement, the ministry said remote education will be implemented nationwide from May 5 to May 8. The measure covers all nurseries, as well as both public and private schools, and applies to students, teachers, and administrative staff.
Authorities said the decision was taken as a precautionary step aimed at ensuring safety across the education sector. The ministry added that the situation will be reviewed on May 8 to determine whether the measure needs to be extended.
The shift in schooling comes after the UAE Defense Ministry reported that its air defense systems intercepted incoming ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones targeting Emirati territory. Officials said sounds heard across parts of the country were linked to interception operations.
Earlier on Monday, a fire broke out at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone on the UAE’s eastern coast after it was struck by a drone reportedly launched from Iran. Local authorities said three Indian nationals sustained moderate injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The developments are part of broader regional tensions that have intensified in recent months following earlier military strikes involving the US and Israel against Iran, which triggered retaliatory actions and increased instability across the Gulf region.
A ceasefire was previously reached through mediation efforts in April, but subsequent negotiations failed to produce a durable agreement, and the truce was later extended without a fixed deadline, according to reports.
Maritime and security tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have also remained elevated, contributing to ongoing uncertainty in the region.
