Gas Pipeline Blasts Spark Large Fire and Evacuations in Southern Russia

(MENAFN) According to reports, a series of explosions has struck a gas pipeline in Russia’s Dagestan region, triggering a major fire and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents.

The incident took place in an industrial zone of the town of Kyzylyurt, where at least three blasts reportedly ruptured the pipeline. Authorities said the resulting fire sent flames rising to around 15 meters high.

Local officials indicated that, based on preliminary assessments, no injuries or fatalities were recorded. The acting regional head stated that emergency teams responded quickly to contain the situation.

Gas supply to the pipeline was shut off soon after the incident, though residual gas in the damaged section continued to feed the fire for some time, according to emergency services.

Evacuations were carried out on a large scale, with reports indicating that residents from roughly 250 homes were moved away from the danger zone. In total, more than 140 people were relocated as a precaution while firefighters and technical crews worked at the scene.

Authorities also confirmed that a 50-kilometer section of the pipeline has been taken out of service as inspections and repairs continue. Early assessments suggest the explosions may have been caused by a pressure loss within the system, though investigations are still ongoing.
