US Launches Strikes in Iran Following Disputed Helicopter Incident

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United States has carried out military strikes in Iran in response to an incident involving a US AH-64 Apache attack helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that President Donald Trump authorized “self-defense strikes… in response to yesterday’s downing of a US Army Apache helicopter.” The military described the action as “a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.”

Iranian media reported that multiple projectiles hit areas on Qeshm Island, a strategically significant location near the narrowest point of the Strait of Hormuz. The island hosts military infrastructure and a key oil terminal. Additional strikes were also reported in parts of Iran’s southern Hormozgan province.

Earlier accounts from CENTCOM indicated that the helicopter had gone down off the coast of Oman during a patrol mission, with both crew members later rescued. The cause of the incident has not been definitively confirmed.

Iran has not formally acknowledged claims that its forces shot down the aircraft. A senior Iranian diplomat, cited in regional reporting, said there was “no deliberate attack” on the helicopter.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, writing on X, warned that US forces operating near Iranian territory “are at constant risk on account of their own human errors, plain accidents, or potentially being caught in crossfire.”

Following the US strikes, he further stated that Iran “will leave no attack or threat unanswered,” adding, “Leave our region if you want to be safe.”
