Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga briefs media on operationalisation of the National GBVF Council, 31 Aug
The Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, will address members of the media on Monday, 31 August 2026, on progress made in operationalising the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF Council).
The briefing will update the media on the Council's establishment and functioning, covering its governance arrangements, institutional capacity, funding, coordination mechanisms, and its role in strengthening South Africa's multisectoral response to gender-based violence and femicide, a response must protect all South Africans, including women, children, persons with disabilities, and the LGBTQI+ community, who continue to be disproportionately affected by violence rooted in gender and sexual orientation.

This briefing takes place against the backdrop of Government's classification of GBVF as a national disaster, and its commitment to strengthening coordination, accountability, monitoring and implementation of the National Strategic Plan on GBVF.
The briefing will focus on:
- The current status of the National GBVF Council;
- Governance and institutional arrangements;
- Funding and resourcing of the Council;
- The Council's role in implementing and monitoring the National Strategic Plan on GBVF, including its commitments to protecting LGBTQI+ persons from targeted and gender-based violence;
- Accountability, reporting and performance monitoring; and
- Next steps in strengthening the national response to GBVF.
This media engagement session will also allow journalists to seek clarity on progress on the outstanding operational matters and the steps ahead in ensuring the Council is fully capacitated to fulfil its mandate.
